Panerai at Its Most Panerai

The Iconic Legacy

Panerai has never really played by the same rules as other Swiss watchmakers.

Its identity was forged through the oversized instruments produced for the Italian Navy, and when those military designs eventually found their way onto civilian wrists, Panerai created an aesthetic that was almost impossible to confuse with anything else.

The PAM00423 captures that philosophy particularly well. Its 47mm Luminor 1950 case, locking crown guard and sandwich dial all draw heavily from the historic Panerai blueprint, while the in-house P.3002 movement gives you three days of power reserve with the remaining reserve displayed directly on the dial.

It is big because a Panerai of this era is supposed to be big. That presence is part of the appeal.

The PAM00423 comes from a period when Panerai’s identity was wonderfully clear. Large cases, simple dials, hand-wound movements and an almost military approach to design. There was nothing apologetic about them.

The P.3002 is also exactly the sort of movement that suits this watch. Winding it becomes part of owning it, and the three-day reserve means it doesn’t demand attention every morning. Turn the watch over and the exhibition caseback gives you a full view of the movement inside.

We’ve fitted this example to its unworn rubber strap, which gives the substantial 47mm case a more relaxed, sporting feel. Its original leather strap stays with the watch, allowing you to change its character without taking anything away from the complete set.

Iconic Status

There was a period when you could recognise a Panerai from the other side of a room, and the PAM00423 belongs firmly to it.

The crown-protection bridge, cushion-shaped Luminor 1950 case and sandwich construction of the dial are not decorative details added to create an identity. They evolved from the functional military watches that established the Panerai name.
