The Iconic Legacy

The GMT-Master was born in the 1950s for a world becoming smaller by the hour. Developed for pilots travelling across time zones, it went on to become one of Rolex’s defining professional watches and, over successive generations, one of the most recognisable sports watches ever made.

The 116710LN represents an important point in that history. Introduced in steel in 2007, it brought the GMT-Master II into the ceramic era, becoming the first stainless-steel GMT to use Rolex’s Cerachrom bezel. The familiar 40mm format remained, but the case, bracelet and dial gave the watch a noticeably more substantial, modern presence.

What makes the LN particularly interesting today is what Rolex hasn’t done since. The 116710LN remains the modern steel GMT defined by a completely black bezel. Later generations have concentrated on two-colour combinations, leaving this discontinued reference with an identity entirely of its own.

Why You’ll Love It

There is something refreshingly understated about the 116710LN. The GMT-Master II has become synonymous with colourful bezels and nicknames, whereas this one simply gets on with being a very good-looking Rolex sports watch. Black dial, black ceramic bezel, steel Oyster bracelet and just that flash of green from the GMT hand. It is distinctive without demanding attention and enormously easy to wear.

That all-black configuration also gives you something the current GMT-Master II collection doesn’t. If Pepsi, Batman and the other familiar combinations aren’t for you, the 116710LN offers a cleaner alternative while still giving you everything that makes the GMT such a compelling watch. It feels equally at home as an everyday watch or something considerably smarter.

This particular example makes an especially strong case for itself. It is a complete 2014 set and has just been through Rolex in February 2026, giving its next owner the reassurance of Rolex service warranty through to February 2028. At £9,250, it is also priced extremely competitively against comparable examples across the wider international market. You are buying a discontinued, complete-set GMT that has recently been back to Rolex, rather than simply buying the cheapest example of the reference you can find.

Iconic Status

The 116710LN is an interesting watch to look back on because, when it was current, the black bezel was simply the standard steel GMT-Master II. With hindsight, its place in the collection looks rather more significant.

It introduced the steel GMT to Cerachrom and brought with it the broader case architecture, Maxi dial, polished centre links and green GMT hand that immediately identify this generation. Yet its monochromatic bezel was not carried forward when Rolex replaced the reference. Sotheby’s has described the 116710LN as the only modern stainless-steel GMT-Master II reference fitted with a monochromatic black bezel.

That makes it a very specific chapter in the GMT story. It isn’t trying to recreate an earlier Pepsi or Coke, and it doesn’t have a modern equivalent sitting alongside it in the catalogue. For me, that is exactly what makes the 116710LN increasingly interesting as a collector’s Rolex.
