The Santos Galbée at Its Best
The Iconic Legacy
The story of the Cartier Santos stretches back to 1904, when Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. More than a century later, the square case, Roman numeral dial and exposed screws remain among the most recognisable elements in watch design.
The Santos Galbée evolved that design into something softer and more wearable. Its name refers to the curved shape of the case, which follows the wrist rather than simply sitting on top of it. Combined with the integrated bracelet, it gave the Santos a distinctive character that was elegant, sporting and unmistakably Cartier.
This W20018D6 dates from 1990, an era of Cartier that I think is particularly interesting today. It has all the design codes people associate with the Santos, but with the proportions and details of an earlier watch rather than the more substantial feel of its modern descendants.
Why You’ll Love It
The proportions are a huge part of the appeal. At 29mm, the Santos Galbée sounds compact on paper, but the square case, exposed bezel and integrated bracelet give it considerably more presence on the wrist. The curved Galbée case also sits beautifully, making this an incredibly easy Cartier to wear whether dressed up or with something much more casual.
Then there is the dial. The warm ivory tone works beautifully against the steel, while those blued hands reveal flashes of colour as the light catches them. They’re small details, but they’re exactly what gives an older Cartier its character and separates it from the cleaner, brighter appearance of a modern watch.
Perhaps most importantly, good examples are becoming harder to find. These were watches people wore, often for decades, and many have consequently been heavily polished or show significant bracelet wear. Finding an early Santos Galbée that still presents this well is becoming increasingly difficult, and that’s a large part of why collectors have started paying much closer attention to them.
Iconic Status
For years, watches such as the Santos Galbée sat slightly outside the main collector conversation. The attention was elsewhere: vintage Tanks, Crash, Cintrée and the rarer shaped Cartiers at one end of the market, and the current Santos collection at the other.
That has changed.
Collectors have increasingly started looking into Cartier’s wider back catalogue, and watches that were once simply regarded as older Cartiers are now being judged on their design, proportions, originality and condition.
The Santos Galbée deserves that attention. The exposed screws, Roman numerals, square bezel and integrated bracelet make it immediately identifiable, while the curved case gives this generation its own personality. It is recognisably Cartier without being the obvious choice, and that’s increasingly part of its appeal.
The best examples are becoming more interesting as genuinely well-preserved watches become harder to find. This one has exactly the look I want from an early steel Santos: understated from a distance, but full of those small Cartier details when you get closer.

This is exactly why early Cartier has become such an interesting part of the market: unmistakable design, beautifully judged proportions and enough age to give the watch a character that a new one simply cannot replicate.
